The Defensive Counter-Revolution
Following years of historic offensive explosions spearheaded by generational quarterbacks throwing deep passes downfield, NFL defensive coordinators reached a tipping point. Led by Vic Fangio and modern defensive minds, the league shifted en masse from single-high safety (Cover 1 and Cover 3) architectures to split-field, two-high safety shells (Cover 2, Cover 4, and Cover 6).
Forcing Patience on Gunslingers
By keeping two safeties 18 to 22 yards off the line of scrimmage: 1. Deep post and go routes are double-bracketed before the ball is even released. 2. Quarterbacks are forced to throw underneath checkdowns, requiring 12-play drives to score rather than 2-play explosive strikes. 3. Offenses have responded by using heavier 12 and 13 personnel (multiple tight ends) to run the ball straight against light defensive boxes.
